What are Larch Trees?

In the Canadian Rockies, especially around Banff, Canmore, and Kananaskis, subalpine larch trees (Larix lyallii) put on a spectacular display every fall. These high-elevation larches are rare deciduous conifers that grow in the alpine and subalpine zones, often above 1,800 metres. Unlike evergreen pines and firs, mountain larches shed their needles each fall after turning a brilliant golden yellow.
This transformation typically peaks in mid to late September, drawing hikers and photographers eager to witness the golden glow known as “larch madness.” Because they grow slowly and survive harsh mountain climates, mountain larches are a symbol of endurance and beauty in the Rockies.
You’ll find them lining some of the region’s most scenic trails, including Larch Valley, Chester Lake, and Ptarmigan Cirque, where golden needles light up the alpine landscape.
